Dr Pete Edmonson, PEng, Former Director of Research, Research In Motion
Dr Edmonson began his career as a research technologist in the Surface Acoustic Wave Device Laboratory at McMaster University. In the early 1980’s he was a microwave design engineer at COM DEV Ltd., Cambridge, Ontario. He initiated, while at COM DEV Ltd., the design and implementation of their space-qualified Surface Acoustic Wave facilities. From 1983 to 1994 he was a faculty member with the Department of Electrotechnology at Mohawk College and was also a lecturer in Electrical and Computer Engineering, at McMaster University. During this period he conducted extensive research on various radio and communication techniques for the wireless industry.
In 1994 he joined Research in Motion Limited, Waterloo, Ontario and developed as Director of Research, the program for digital-packet cellular-radio applications. He was active in the research, planning, design and manufacturing of RIM’s various wireless modem products including the Blackberry® series of two-way cellular messaging products. In 2001 he left Research in Motion to pursue other personal intere
sts in the communication and sensor industries. Dr. Edmonson holds advisory and equity positions in both a Canadian manufacturing company and an American biotechnology company. Dr Edmonson has 41 technical publications, 30 issued patents and several pending. He is a member of both the Professional Engineers of Ontario and a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Dr Edmonson, first received a diploma in electronics technology from Mohawk College, Hamilton, Ontario, and then obtained his B.Eng., M.Eng. and Ph.D degrees in electrical engineering from McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario. |
