GRADUATE STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS
PROGRAM DETAILS
Graduate students are important to informatics research in Alberta.
iCORE's graduate student scholarship program is designed to foster a strong graduate student population. This supports the development of strong informatics research teams, which in turn elevates the research reputation and productivity of the universities. Graduate students may also develop important roles in Alberta companies and become active leaders in the emerging information and communications technology (ICT) sector in the province.
Funding is available to graduate students in the departments of computer science (CS) or electrical and computer engineering (ECE) who hold an NSERC postgraduate scholarship or an NSERC-equivalent scholarship. NSERC-equivalent scholarships are Alberta Ingenuity, Steinhauer, Killam and Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research (AHFMR) scholarships
*NEW and effective as of April 1, 2007: Funding is available to
Alberta university graduate students outside of the CS and ECE departments who are supervised by an iCORE Chair, iCORE Professor, or iCORE Industry Chair and hold a NSERC postgraduate scholarship.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Students must qualify in one of these four categories:
1) Alberta university CS or ECE students who hold an NSERC Canada Graduate Scholarship (CGS) or Post Graduate Scholarship (PGS).
2) Alberta university CS or ECE students who hold an NSERC-equivalent scholarship. NSERC-equivalent scholarships are Alberta Ingenuity, Steinhauer, Killam and AHFMR scholarships.
3) Alberta university's highest caliber international students in CS or ECE who are ineligible for NSERC awards but are considered to be of equivalent stature. Students must be nominated for an award by the department.
4) Alberta university students not in CS and ECE who hold an NSERC Canada Graduate Scholarship (CGS) or Post Graduate Scholarship (PGS) and are supervised by an iCORE Chair, iCORE Professor or iCORE Industry Chair.
Once
an application has been made and approved,
funds are distributed to students on
a monthly basis upon commencement of
studies.
Tenure
of these iCORE Graduate Student Scholarships
matches the tenure of the NSERC or other
scholarships. In the case of international
students, the tenure of each award is
two years and international awards are not renewable.
1)
Awards to students who
hold an NSERC Canada Graduate Scholarship
(CGS) or Post Graduate Scholarships
(PGS):
PGS-M:
An NSERC PGS-M award is $17,300 per year for one or two years in a master’s program. Students who are awarded or renew an NSERC PGS-M award receive $12,000 per year from iCORE. This makes for total annual compensation of $29,300. In the case where a student holds multiple awards, iCORE limits their awards so the total award is $30,000 for master's students.
PGS-D:
An NSERC PGS-D award is $21,000 per year for two or three years in a doctoral graduate program. Students who hold a PGS-D award receive an additional iCORE award of $15,000 per year. This makes for total annual compensation of $36,000/year. In the case where a student holds multiple awards, iCORE limits their awards so the total award is $36,000 for doctoral students.
CGS-D or CGS-M:
An NSERC CGS-D award is $35,000 per year for up to three years for doctoral students, and $17,500 for one year for a CGS-M master’s student. For a CGS-D award, a doctoral student would receive an additional $10,000 per year from iCORE. For a CGS-M award, a master’s student would receive a one-time $12,000. This makes for total annual compensation of $45,000 for a doctoral student and $29,500 for a master’s student. A CGS-M award that is renewed in the second year becomes a PGS-M award in the renewal year. In the case where a student holds multiple awards, iCORE does not place limits on the award amount given to supplement CGS awards.
2)
Additional iCORE awards are also offered to graduate students in computer science and electrical and computer engineering at an Alberta university who receive other scholarships equivalent to NSERC awards. Equivalent scholarships are Alberta Ingenuity, Steinhauer, Killam and Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research (AHFMR) scholarships. In the case where a student holds multiple awards, iCORE limits their awards so the total award is $30,000 for master's students and $36,000 for doctoral students.
3)
Three additional iCORE awards are offered to excellent international graduate students working in computer science or electrical and computer engineering, who are ineligible for NSERC postgraduate awards. These awards are for $12,000 per year for master’s students and $15,000 per year for doctoral students for a non-renewable tenure of two years. Students are nominated for an award by the department and may apply through the department graduate student coordinator.
