iCORE
researchers awarded almost $10 million
in provincial funding for infrastructure
projects
Calgary
(6 June 2002) -- Several iCORE research
teams will be helping to advance Alberta's
research infrastructure as a result of
yesterday's funding announcement on the
2000-2001 Alberta Science and Research
Investments Program (ASRIP).
ASRIP
directed almost $39 million to 55 initiatives
overall. Many of the investments match
awards made by Canada Foundation for Innovation
several months ago.

iCORE recipients include:
Project

High-Capacity Digital Communications Lab
A research facility to facilitate design,
simulation, implementation and testing
of high capacity, high reliability digital
communications systems.
$125,000 (Research Infrastructure)
Project
Lead: Michael Brett
Nanofabrication Facility
A facility that will extend the capabilities
of the existing open-access Microfab to
that of the best in Canada to enable innovative
research in nanobiotechnologies, nanoscience,
and nanomaterials in ICT, health, and
resource sectors.

Project
Lead: Jonathan Schaeffer
WestGrid: Western Canada Research Computing
Grid Canada's first comprehensive
grid, an integrated system of high-performance
computing facilities, data storage capability,
collaborative work sites, high-speed networks,
and human resources that together will
provide a unique shared research infrastructure
for research groups across Alberta and
British Columbia. $5,995,420 (Research
Infrastructure)

Lead: Carey Williamson
Experimental Laboratory for Internet Systems
and Applications (ELISA)
Measurement and evaluation of emerging
wired and wireless internet technologies.
