Two
iCORE Chairs elected to the Royal Society
of Canada in 2002
CALGARY
(26 June 2002) -- Two researchers supported
by the Alberta Informatics Circle of Research
Excellence have been elected to the ranks
of the Royal Society of Canada. Norman
Beaulieu and Gérard Lachapelle
are both newly elected 2002 Fellows.
Fellowship
in the Royal Society of Canada is considered
Canada's most prestigious academic accolade
to which scholars and scientists aspire.
"These distinguished individuals
have accomplished work of truly outstanding
quality," said Howard Alper, President
of the Royal Society of Canada. "They
add enormous value to the extraordinary
resource of talent and experience that
constitutes the Society."
The
citations for the awards describe Dr Beaulieu
as "a scientific leader in the analysis
and modelling of wireless communications
systems. He has discovered ingenious mathematical
solutions and models for a wide range
of digital communications components and
applications ? International researchers
have widely used his methods, models and
results."
Gérard
Lachapelle was elected due to his contributions
"in a sustained and major way to
the development and dissemination of satellite-based
navigation technology in Canada and internationally,
and has played an important role in the
successful training of a score of technical
experts. Through his innovative research
and technology transfer activities, he
has provided leadership for Canada to
be recognized as truly excellent in this
new technology."
A
total of 58 new Fellows were elected this
year. This year's new Fellows will be
inducted to the Society in a ceremony
set to take place at Rideau Hall on Friday,
November 22, 2002.
