Dr Sheelagh Carpendale
Dr Saul Greenberg
Interactive Technologies Research
Drs Carpendale and Greenberg have received an Industry Chair Establishment grant from iCORE and SMART Technologies Inc. $200,000 per year, for 5 years, in addition to various contributions from the Department of Computer Science and University of Calgary.
Research Program Overview
One of the few research groups in the world that studies the development of interactive table-top displays, Drs Carpendale and Greenberg lead a collaborative effort involving several researchers and numerous graduate students. Their projects include the ethnographic study of human-computer interactions to determine what’s most effective for the user; the design of technology that supports or mimics the way humans normally interact; the development of technologies that use natural input such as voice and hand-gesture commands rather than buttons, menus or keyboards; design of technology interfaces and other software that facilitates group collaboration; visualization and manipulation of complex data sets; the design of interactive table-top and wall displays, including command-and-control applications that allow users to manipulate and share digitized information, and monitor each others’ activities; the development of home appliances and other so-called “ubiquitous computing” devices and the study of the ethical implications of “always on” technology such as Webcams.
Dr Sheelagh Carpendale - Biography
Sheelagh Carpendale is director of the University of Calgary’s Innovations in Visualization Interactions Laboratory and a U of C assistant professor of computer science. She has a PhD in computer science from Simon Fraser University, has trained at the Sheridan College School of Design and the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design, and for ten years worked professionally in the arts. Her specialties include development of large table displays for group interaction, as well as visualization of a variety of complex relationships, including genetic information, oil exploration data, and hospital workflow information. With a previous grant from SMART Technologies, she and her students developed the highest-resolution horizontal graphical interface to date – an important step towards making large tabletop displays functional for the workplace.
Dr Saul Greenberg - Biography
Saul Greenberg is a University of Calgary professor of computer science and director of its GroupLab, a collaborative facility specializing in research in the fields of Human Computer Interaction (HCI) and Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW). An expert in creating information visualization and manipulation techniques for large data spaces, he also studies how people work together, how the computer and related technologies affect group behaviour, and how software can be designed to support and augment group collaboration in its many forms. He has PhD and Master’s degrees in computer science from the University of Calgary, has served as editorial board member for the International Journal of Human Computer Studies and the CSCW Journal, and was instrumental in creating a software product called TeamWave Workplace, which is now used in many office environments to facilitate group collaboration. He is also an expert in the ethics of human-computer interaction, including privacy issues surrounding video displays (such as Webcams) that are always turned on.
