Dr
Norman C. Beaulieu, P.Eng.
iCORE Wireless Communications
Laboratory
iCORE
has committed $700K per year for 5 years
for a total of $3.5 million to establish
this Chair. This represents roughly 50%
of the total iCORE Wirless Communications
Laboratory budget, which also includes
funds from Dr. Beaulieu's Steacie fellowship,
a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair (CRC),
and other university commitments.
Biographical Information
Dr Norman C. Beaulieu, P.Eng., is a world-renowned researcher in wireless communications, whose interests in wireless communications research include spread spectrum and multicarrier systems, transmitter and receiver diversity and fading channel modelling and prediction. He has also made contributions to decision feedback equalization, efficient simulation of communication systems and digital synchronization.
In 1999, Dr Beaulieu won one of four E. W. R. Steacie Memorial Fellowships, Canada's top prize for all areas of scientific research, from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC). In the same year, he was elected Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) "for contributions to the analysis and modeling of wireless data and digital communication systems." He was appointed Editor-in-Chief for the IEEE Transactions on Communications in 2000 after serving as Editor for Wireless Communication Theory for this journal and Associate Editor for Wireless Communication Theory for the IEEE Communications Letters. Dr. Beaulieu came to Alberta in September 2000, when he joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Alberta as the iCORE Chair in Broadband Wireless Communication Systems. Professor Beaulieu received his Ph.D. degree from the University of British Columbia and was Associate Head of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Queen's University before coming to Alberta.
