Dr Sirish Shah
Computer Process Control
iCORE’s investment in Dr Shah and the University of Alberta will continue the work supported by NSERC, Matrikon and the Alberta Science and Research Authority (ASRA) in 2001. In the renewed phase of the industrial research chair program, Dr Shah has received $100,000 per year cash from Suncor, $100,000 from Matrikon, and over $200,000 per year for 5 years from NSERC, alongside iCORE's $100,000 per year cash investment for a period of 5 years. In addition to cash, substantial in-kind contributions will be made to the project by various partners and the University of Alberta.
Research Program Overview
Dr Shah is continuing the development and evaluation of tools and demonstrating the utility of these tools in the Canadian process industry. By tracking each machine asset in the process, performance assessment and monitoring applications are allowing the industry to change maintenance methodology from predictive to condition based, saving time and money. As the numbers of machines being monitored on most sites continues to outnumber the maintenance and control personnel, monitoring and diagnosing control problems is becoming more challenging. Dr Shah’s end goal is to develop practical tools that industrial personnel can use for knowledge discovery from process data and use them effectively towards process and performance monitoring.
Biographical Information
Dr Shah completed his undergraduate and master’s work in the UK, prior to completing his PhD at the University of Alberta. Since his appointment in 2001, Dr Shah has worked to establish a centre of research excellence in Intelligent Systems and Control. He has held visiting appointments at Oxford University and Balliol College as a SERC fellow in 1985-86 and at Kumamoto University, Japan as a senior research fellow of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) in 1994, and at the University of Newcastle, Australia in 2004. Dr Shah has also held consulting appointments with a wide variety of process Industries and has also taught many industrial courses.
In Alberta, Dr Shah has been able to find in an environment that is a model for successful technology transfer and development - Industry, University, and Application Developers working together to deliver solutions to specific industrial problems. Along with the University of Alberta’s, Dr Shah is able to leverage two industrial partners, Suncor and Matrikon. The systems and methods used by Suncor provide ongoing and interactive access to process data analysis challenges, while Matrikon will partner to commercialize the information-based, decision support system. To this end, Alberta’s industry partners Suncor and Matrikon will allow Dr Shah’s research to benefit the industry as quickly as possible.
