iCORE
has committed $500K per year for 5 years
for a total of $2.5 million to develop
this research group. Dr. Lachapelle has
been recommended by the University of
Calgary for a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair
(CRC) as the University of Calgary's Faculty
of Engineering's highest priority. This
represents approximately one third of
his total $1.5 million per year budget,
which totals $7.5 million over 5 years
Biographical
Information
Dr Gérard LaChapelle is a CRC/iCORE
Chair in Wireless Location in the Department
of Geomatics Engineering at the University
of Calgary, where he has been a faculty
member since 1988.
Dr Lachapelle has 20 years of industrial
and academic research experience related
to wireless location. He has performed
pioneering work related to the development
of new methods and novel applications
of the Global Positioning System (GPS).
His contributions to the development,
dissemination and commercialization of
GPS technologies have had a major impact.
The GPS software that he has developed
with his co-workers has been successfully
licensed to thousands of users throughout
the world. He has conducted research related
to cellular telephone location and he
is co-author of one of Cell-Loc Inc.'s
key initial patents. He has successfully
built a multi-disciplinary team of researchers
to accomplish the above and has, in the
process, contributed to the training of
scores of graduate and post-graduate students.
The pioneering and excellent work of his
team has been recognized through scores
of major foreign and national awards and
distinctions. Throughout his career, he
has proved to be an effective team builder
and leader, to be able to identify research
areas of importance, and to effectively
transfer the outcome of his research to
industry. The software and patent that
have been transferred to industry through
University Technologies International
have generated well in excess of five
million dollars. He is among the initial
pioneers who have made Calgary an internationally
recognized centre of excellence in GPS,
one of Calgary's major ICT areas of success.
